Observing Nature: Edna Lawrence & Cabinets of Curiosities

Celebrating 80 years, the RISD Nature Lab continues to fulfill the mission of founder Edna W. Lawrence to “open students eyes to the marvels of beauty in nature." Although tools and technology have changed, her teachings and vision are still at the core of many science, design and fine arts practices.

This exhibition's opening reception includes an open panel featuring three panelists who will discuss the value and relevance of Edna Lawrence's vision from their distinct disciplines:

  • David L. Wagner (Entomologist):
The role of color and pattern in nature
  • Betsy Ruppa (Lab Coordinator at the Nature Lab):
The value of having a natural history collection in an art school
  • Alba Corrado (RISD Faculty):
Recollections from one of Edna Lawrence’s students who now teaches her pedagogy of learning from nature

Registration opens to the general public the week before the event.
