1/10, 1/11, 1/17, 1/24: Folded Forms: Origami as a Design Language

About the program: Join the Nature Lab and Fleet Library in collaboration with Origamido, an origami design and handmade paper studio led by Michael G. LaFosse and Richard L. Alexander, for a series of engaging workshops and a unique design challenge this Wintersession.

This series of workshops will explore how nature solves specific challenges through the art of folding, and how we can use these insights to propose innovative strategies to help tackle climate change and design more regeneratively. Participants will develop practical skills in basic origami techniques, and learn how origami technology can be used to optimize resource use and efficiency. Participants in this workshop series will have the opportunity to engage with a unique design challenge and submit their work to the Peabody-Essex Museum for potential inclusion in their upcoming exhibition “Origami Inspirations,” which is set to open in December 2026.

Please note registration is REQUIRED to attend these programs, as we need a headcount to ensure materials are available for everyone. We also highly encourage attendees to attend every event, as later sessions will build upon skills and techniques explored in the initial workshops. RSVP here.

These workshops will take place in the Nature Lab's Biodesign Makerspace, Room 11.

1/10: Introduction to Nature's Origami

In this first workshop, participants will learn basic origami techniques, explore similarity and difference in seemingly "identical" folds, discuss the strengths of different structures, and review some of the folds found in the natural world.

January 10
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The Nature Lab Biodesign Makerspace (Rm 11)

1/11: Fundamental Folding Mechanics

In this second workshop, participants will explore the impact of paper's material qualities on structural results, discuss the mathematical theorems and foundations of origami folds, review objects from RISD's Arthur Loeb Design Science Teaching Collection, and compare natural versus human design. During this workshop the prompt for the "Origami Inspirations" Peabody-Essex Museum exhibition will be introduced.

January 11
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The Nature Lab Biodesign Makerspace (Rm 11)

1/17: Case Studies in Biomimetic Folding and Mini-Crits

In this third workshop, participants will offer quick concept presentations in response to the design challenge introduced on 1/11 and take part in "mini-crits" to shape their projects. We will also take a deep dive into biomimetic folding, studying several examples from the natural world, and construct modular origami creations to explore structural principles.

January 17
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The Nature Lab Biodesign Makerspace, Room 11.

1/24: Design Challenge Critiques

In this final session, participants will engage in presentation and critique of their work in preparation for submission to the Peabody-Essex Museum's call for work for their upcoming exhibition, "Origami Inspirations", which will be due by Saturday, February 7.

January 24
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
